Mothers tighten festive purse strings

Prudent British mothers are set to tighten the purse strings this festive season, a survey found.

The average family will spend 505 on gifts and festivities this Christmas compared with 604 in 2009.

Research conducted by Littlewoods.com loyalty scheme – Littlewoods Rewards – found that more than half 3,000 mothers questioned admitted they have been saving for the festive season for at least six months.

A Littlewoods.com spokesman said: "Due to the ongoing economical challenges, mums are having to really keep a close eye on their bank balance this Christmas.

"Mums are becoming more and more savvy at making their budget stretch, seeking out the best special offers and reward schemes to help themcreate the perfect holiday occasion."
