Motorists face ban from city station in parking shake-up

MOTORISTS are to be banned from parking on the forecourt of Sheffield's rail station to ease congestion and are being told to use a free 30-minute offer at a nearby multi-storey.

Sheffield Council, car park owner Q Park and station operators East Midlands Trains said they had been "working together to find a solution to traffic build up around the drop-off area".

Short stay parking will no longer be available on the station forecourt under the new rules and only taxis and disabled motorists will be able to park in the forecourt area.

John Bann, head of transport and highways at Sheffield Council said: "We've been working with East Midlands Trains and Q Park to find a solution to traffic build up in the area for a while now.

"We have managed to agree a solution that should improve the situation for everyone. By widening the drop-off area we can improve traffic flow for those who are simply dropping off.

"People waiting to pick someone up will wait at the nearby Q Park car park and take advantage of 30 minutes free parking – doubling the 15 minutes parking previously available on the forecourt.

"Of course disabled access will stay the same. The improvement works will take place next week and we apologise for any disruption but intend that the changes will improve the situation."

Between Tuesday and Friday, May 25-8, there will be no access to the station drop-off point for anyone except taxis and cyclists, with access to the disabled parking area.

A Traffic Regulation Order has also been put in place to allow Sheffield City Council to enforce station forecourt regulations. Previously this had been managed by East Midlands Trains and council officers could not legally patrol the area.
