Motorists warned as bikers protest at speed trap

MOTORISTS are being warned to expect disruption as up to 1,000 bikers take to the roads in East Yorkshire this Saturday.

The motorcyclists will be riding through Hull to protest against Humberside Police's use of an unmarked super-fast Suzuki to snare speeding bikers.

Police will be seeing the bikers off from the Beverley Grovehill roundabout at 11.30am, with the event marshalled throughout by members of the Motorcycle Action Group.

About 3,000 bikers are due to arrive today at South Dalton for this year's three-day Into the Valley event, now in its 12th year and the second biggest motorcycle-only event in Europe.

The chairman of East Yorkshire Motorcycle Action Group, Jolyon Lawson, one of the organisers, said they had had positive meetings with the police, but still disagreed with their use of an unmarked police rider.

He said: "By their own figures, Operation Achilles appears to be doing what it sets out to do – discouraging speeders.

"But we want them to go high visibility so we are know they are out there..."

A "Riders are Voters" rally at the Humber Bridge car park at 1pm will be addressed by three politicans, including motorcyclist and parliamentary candidate for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart.

Mr Lawson added: "What we are trying to do is get ourselves recognised as a road user group because we are so often overlooked."

Chief Inspector Darren Downs, from Humberside Police's road policing section, said: "Humberside Police and MAG expect all participants on the run to abide to traffic regulations, adhere to road laws in a sensible manner and stick to the arranged route."
