Motorists warned to stick to main roads in region

People across Yorkshire can expect to see no let-up from the freezing conditions which claimed another life.

The Met Office said the worst of the snow is over for the region but warned that strong winds will take hold and freezing temperatures will remain for at least a further 10 days.

A teenage boy was killed and his mother seriously injured in a crash on the A1 on Wednesday night. Nationally, over 22 people died after incidents thought to have been related to the weather since before Christmas.

Councils across Yorkshire have reported low levels of grit, with major disruption to roads and services continuing and have warned motorists to stick to main roads if travel is necessary.

Calderdale Council received an emergency delivery of 100 tonnes of grit, while Kirklees has been put on the Government's priority list.

In North Yorkshire the county council removed dwindling supplies from rural areas over fears people are stealing it.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service has scrapped all non-emergency transport until at least Monday and many schools across the region remain closed.

Bus firms are continuing to operate, but many are avoiding rural areas. With warnings of further bad weather, shops in South Yorkshire reported customers panic-buying supplies of eggs, milk, bread and salt.

Gas supplies have been restored to about 450 homes in Dewsbury and Batley which were cut off on New Year's Eve.
