Motorway cable thieves cause commuter chaos on the M62

COPPER thieves caused motorway chaos after cutting down overhead electric cables and leaving some dangling over the M62 this morning.

Police were alerted soon after 7.30am to reports that overhead power cables had been stolen from Methley, near Castleford, during the night.

The cables covered both the slip roads at junction 30 of the motorway and were “posing a risk to vehicles using the road,” police said.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police, said: “As a result of the incident there was significant disruption to the motorway during the morning rush hour.”

The spokesman added: “Stealing cables is of course dangerous but can also cause significant disruption to other people.”
