Mourners’ message for killer driver

THE family of a six-year-old boy who died in a hit-and-run crash used his funeral service to issue a message to the driver responsible.

Owen Wightman, of Wakefield, was killed on June 18 when he was struck by a car as he played with his best friend next to a road less than half-a-mile from his house.

At Owen’s funeral yesterday his father Neil said the driver “has taken away our precious little boy, which we will never forgive or forget”.

He added: “Today is our longest day, but the clock is ticking because tomorrow we focus all our efforts on justice. Finally I pray that when you are known to us, the public and media, that you are offered the same care, thought and consideration that you gave our little boy.”

A 21-year-old man was arrested and bailed following the incident.
