Move aims to save green belt

GREEN belt land in York has moved a step closer to being protected for the next 20 years, after councillors approved blueprints for future development in the city.

The decision to keep York’s existing green belt boundaries and protect it from development, is part of the Local Development Framework (LDF) core strategy, which sets out the basis for development in York over the next 20 years, and was approved by the council’s executive on Tuesday.

A public consultation on the core strategy will now run until late May, giving residents the opportunity to comment on the LDF, before it is submitted to the Government

In 2009, a consultation for the LDF found 60 per cent of respondents were opposed to identifying any land in the green belt for development.

Coun Keith Hyman said: “I am sure residents will be delighted if we can secure more protection for these valuable green spaces.”
