Move to clear the streets of abandoned danger vehicles

Abandoned cars and other vehicles that blight communities in Wakefield are being targeted.

The operation runs from August 5 to September 2 and during that time Wakefield Council will provide a free service where they will take away any unwanted unroadworthy vehicles kept on private land before they become a target for vandals.

These include cars, trailers, vans and caravans which appear to be unroadworthy, damaged and usually do not display a current tax disc.

Coun Maureen Cummings, the council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “We need to work together to keep our streets both safe and clean.

“Old vehicles are not only a target for vandals, but cause damage to the environment from leaking fluids, can be dangerous to children and take up valuable parking space.

“Operation Safe Streets is just what is says it is – and also a way of preventing illegal dumping of old vehicles by cowboy operators.”

Operation Safe Streets is organised by the council’s anti-social behaviour unit, working in partnership with Wakefield Council’s contractor ROTA, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Wakefield Police and Wakefield and District Housing.

Ian Dunkley, Wakefield district fire commander, said: “Abandoned vehicles disfigure our communities and often prove an unnecessary drain on our over-stretched public services.”

Anyone who wants to report a car or vehicle for removal that they no longer want should call 0845 8506506.
