Move to strip GCSEs of skills tests attacked

MOVES to end the assessment of teenagers’ speaking and listening abilities as counting towards GCSE English grades have been criticised.

The Communication Trust and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
said it was profoundly disappointing.

Exams regulator Ofqual is pushing ahead with the plans to strip the key skills out of the qualifications following concerns the assessments carried out by teachers are not conducted or marked consistently across all schools.

The Communication Trust, which represents 47 organisations working in children’s speech, language and communication, and the RCSLT have condemned the move in an open letter which warned of the impact on pupils’ abilities and, in particular, of the effect on students with special educational needs.
