MP mucks in with woodland volunteers

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones helped clear the bird boxes in the Pinewoods in Harrogate as part of a number of tasks he agreed to perform for Volunteer Week.

He said it was a lucky coincidence that Volunteer Week fell on the same week that the Pinewooods Conservation Group was doing its annual clean-out of more than 40 boxes. "Birds will not use the boxes if the old nests are still there because there would be mites and other insects increasing the chance of disease for the birds," he said.

"Without the group caring for the conservation of the woods, the level of bird life and all wildlife would be far lower. Volunteers are essential to the protection of areas of natural beauty."
