MP puts in a few words for Tour bid

EFFORTS to bring the Tour de France to Yorkshire in four years time received new backing yesterday from an MP who has made his feelings known in French.

Rotherham MP and former Europe Minister Denis MacShane said he had taken the novel approach in a bid to attract more international attention to the county’s campaign.

Regional tourist board Welcome to Yorkshire is behind the idea, and Mr MacShane’s letter has been sent to its chief executive Gary Verity.

In English the letter reads: “Congratulations to Welcome to Yorkshire and the authorities in England’s most beautiful county on your campaign to get the Tour de France to come to Yorkshire.

This excellent idea will help link Yorkshire with cycling, a participative sport that is one of the most popular in Europe.”

The Yorkshire route would start in Leeds before taking in the Dales and the North York Moors along with key locations including York, Scarborough, Hull and Sheffield.

The bid has already been backed by world sprint champion Mark Cavendish.
