MP's plea over tourist death

MINISTERS have been asked to intervene over complaints that Spanish police have failed to properly investigate the death of a 31-year-old holidaymaker from Yorkshire.

Mark Aveyard, from Leeds, died in Gran Canaria last August but police are accused of failing to carry out a "thorough investigation" despite his father reporting seeing injuries when he collected his son's body.

Yesterday Europe Minister Chris Bryant agreed to meet Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland to discuss the issue. Mr Mulholland also raised concerns that Foreign Office staff had not treated Mr Aveyard's family well.

"Whilst nothing we can do will stop the Aveyards' grief, hopefully we can help them by moving towards a conclusion in the case," he added.

Mr Bryant said his condolences went to the family for the "distressing" situation, but defended British officials in Spain.
