Marks & Spencer has decided to press ahead with the planned closure of its Scunthorpe store, putting 36 jobs at risk.

M&S bosses said a public consultation exercise had failed to attract any proposals that would make the store “commercially viable”.

The company, which opened in Scunthorpe High Street in 1932, previously revealed that sales and profits had declined over the last three years.

M&S regional head Graeme Pallant said: “We have consulted with our employee representatives, listening carefully to their views and suggestions, as well as those of the local community.

“Unfortunately, none of the proposed alternatives we received would have made the store commercially viable and therefore, it was necessary for us to make this difficult decision.”

The company is to continue consultations before the closure expected in January.
