Murdered student’s ex-girlfriend in charity run

THE FORMER girlfriend of one of the two Sheffield University students who were shot dead while on holiday in Miami is set to take part in next month’s Great Yorkshire Run to raise money for a charity set up in memory of the pair.

James Kouzaris, 24, and James Cooper, 25, were murdered in Newtown, a deprived part of the city of Sarasota, while on holiday in Florida in April.

Friends and family of the pair have now set up a charity called “Always a Chance” in their memory and, on Sunday October 9, Liz Clare – Mr Kouzaris’s former girlfriend – will take part in the 10k run with a group of friends to raise money for the cause.

Miss Clare, from Baston in Peterborough, said: “I only started running two months ago when I signed up to do the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run and I thought it would be harder than it actually is. The reason why I’m running has motivated me a great deal so the challenge has seemed easier when I think about the boys and Always a Chance.

“I will be training every day before the event and hope to complete the course in an hour and 15 minutes.”

Always A Chance helps raise awareness in schools of the dangers of becoming involved in violent crime.
