Museum offering journeys back in time on the buses

VEHICLES including restored buses, a collection of MGs and a Second World War Dukw, or amphibious lorry, will be on show at the South Yorkshire Transport Museum on Sunday.

Gates of the museum in Aldwarke, Rotherham, open at 11am and admission is free to those who arrive in a pre-1973 classic vehicle.

A spokesman for the museum in Waddington Way said: “The museum is one of the newest attractions in South Yorkshire and has something for everyone, from heritage bus rides, to our newest additions including a fire engine. We now also have a much larger display area.

“There will be the chance to see one of only two Rotherham motor buses ever restored. The museum also has a collection of older buses, other varied vehicles and transport items.”

Entry for the “event day” costs £3.50 for adults or £8 for a family ticket, while a vintage bus will provide a regular shuttle service from Rotherham Interchange.

Meanwhile, the South Yorkshire Transport Museum is also looking for volunteers.

Business consultant Richard Baker, who works as a mentor to the museum, said volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including engineering, cleaning, painting, guides, marketing and helping to run the shop and cafe.

He said: “The museum is a charity costing £1,000 a week to operate and we need a larger team of volunteers – especially younger people – to help make it more viable and preserve it for future generations.”

Those interested in volunteering can gain information on Sunday.
