Museum plans to offer Christening alternative

AN ALTERNATIVE to a conventional Christening is now being offered by The National Children’s Museum Eureka! in Halifax.

The so-called naming ceremonies have been devised to offer a non-religious alternative to a Christening for families who want to formally recognise the arrival of a new child without involving the Church.

Eureka! has worked with a Yorkshire based organisation called One Life Ceremonies to offer tailor-made ceremonies at the muesuem, which is housed in a building dating from 1855.

Laurra Nalty, of One Life Ceremonies, said: “We are delighted to be bringing our naming ceremonies to Eureka!

“It’s the ideal place to celebrate this family event which can be held to mark the arrival of a new baby or to formally name a child of any age, as well as welcoming adopted or step-children into a family.”

Every ceremony is structured to meet that family’s expectations, and may include features such as readings, parents’ promises and music. Options include other symbolic acts such releasing balloons or lighting candles.

Chloe Oldman, Business Development Manager at Eureka! said: “We want to give families the opportunity to celebrate their children in a place that is purpose-built for engaging and inspiring a child through play so following the ceremony the family and guests can also explore the museum free of charge which makes it a great day out for everyone.”
