Museum puts Chinese art on display

More than 400 works were left to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford by Professor Michael Sullivan when he died earlier this year.

Many of the artworks have never been seen in public before.

The professor, who was a world authority on Chinese art, started amassing the collection with his wife during the 1940s and continued after he retired in 1985 to Oxford.

The Ashmolean Museum’s director, Professor Christopher Brown, said: “Michael Sullivan was a long-standing friend and supporter of the Ashmolean and it is through his forethought and generosity that we have received this outstanding collection.

“We hope this is a fitting testament to a great art historian and collector.”
