Museum turns over new leaf with Holly

Scarborough Museums Trust has appointed a new learning manager.

Holly Hyams will work with local schools and community groups on the charity’s educational projects at its two venues, the Rotunda: the William Smith Museum of Geology, and Scarborough Art Gallery.

She will also deliver learning programmes and develop access to the Scarborough Collections, the name given to all the museum objects owned by the borough, which range from stuffed animals to fine oil paintings.

Ms Hyams has a diverse background in the museums sector in the local area. She worked part-time in the Visitor Services Team at Whitby Abbey while studying for a post-graduate degree in Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture at York University, then volunteered at both York Castle Museum and the Whitby Museum, where
she is currently an elected member of the management committee as well as being one of the trustees.

Most recently, she was activities co-ordinator for the Heritage-Lottery-funded Fish & Ships project at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby.

In a statement to journalists she said: “Having developed a deep affinity for the North Yorkshire Coast and its varied history I am tremendously excited by the prospect of working with the diverse collections of Scarborough Museums Trust and of developing relationships with schools
and communities across the borough.

“I hope to build on the fantastic success of my predecessor Ian Read in ensuring that we remain an inspirational source of learning and enjoyment for both residents and visitors to the area.”

Ms Hyams said she is keen to establish links with local schools and educational and community groups.
