Museum visitors encouraged to vote for sporting favourites

VISITORS to a Scunthorpe United exhibition at North Lincolnshire Museum are being encouraged to vote for their all time favourite player.

Almost 3,000 people visited the museum last month to see Our Sporting Life: A Celebration of Scunthorpe United, which features memorabilia, photographs and fans’ stories, with many items loaned by supporters.

The poll on the favourite player is being led by Alex Calvo Garcia and Gary Hooper, with Iron legend and former England boss Kevin Keegan also featuring, along with Billy Sharp, Joe Murphy and Matt Sparrow.

The exhibition, which runs until January 8, is part of a series of displays taking place across the country to provide an insight into how sport has shaped the country.

Highlights from each exhibition will become part of the largest ever display of British sporting life and heritage that will be held in London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Objects and stories will be joined by icons and treasures from our national sports, including the Ashes urn, the Calcutta Cup and the football from the 1966 World Cup Final.

Scunthorpe United author John Staff will be running a free history talk at the museum on June 20. To book places, call 01724 843533.
