Museum visitors offered trip back to Britain in the 1950s

FUZZY felt toys and a puppet of children’s television character Muffin the Mule are among the items now on show in an exhibition on 1950s Britain at Cusworth Hall Museum in Doncaster.

The exhibition, entitled Having It So Good after Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s speech of July 1957, opened on Saturday and runs until Saturday, April 23.

It brings together items including children’s toys, ceramic pieces by Clarice Cliff and a selection of sheet music from the period, to cast light on a decade that began with the country still subject to rationing and went on to include the Queen’s coronation, the Festival of Britain and the Suez Crisis.

Visitors will be able to find out about some of the social changes which took place during the decade, including the first large-scale arrivals of people from the Commonwealth and the beginnings of pop music.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “The fifties were a great decade and I have fond memories of growing up in Doncaster then. I would encourage everyone to come and see this interesting exhibition.”

Cusworth Hall Museum is closed on Mondays, Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings. Admission costs £2 for adults or £1 for concessions, although entry to Cusworth Park is free.
