Musical treat for city shoppers as concert in park promoted

All the city centre was a stage for opera singers yesterday, who were giving passers-by a flavour of a free classical concert on Sunday.

Hull University’s Lee Tsang performed Figaro at St Stephen’s shopping centre and is among the cast appearing in the Lord Mayor’s Music in the Gardens concert, an event criticised by the Liberal Democrat opposition on Hull Council over its £47,000 cost. The concert was the idea of outgoing Lord Mayor Colin Inglis, as an alternative to the Lord Mayor’s Parade, but the opposition labelled it a “vanity project.”

Coun Inglis said: “I am very grateful to the Liberal Democrats as they have given the event loads and loads of publicity – but as usual they didn’t finish the job because they didn’t put a date on the literature.”

The concert starts at 1.30pm with Jazz at the Bandstand at Queens Gardens followed from 2pm to 4.15pm with Hull Sinfonietta, the largest professional chamber ensemble within Humber region, with Sarah Leonard, the voice of Silencium as featured on BBC’s Silent Witness.

A classical concert in Queens Gardens in 2004 attracted around 5,000 people.

Coun Inglis added: “Go to Classics in the Park at Brantingham and it will cost you £30 – this is free.”
