Musicians and dancers to lead celebrations

Celebrations will greet the Torch as it journeys through Yorkshire, with parties planned across the region to mark its arrival.

In Hull, where the Torch will spend its first night in the county, an open-air festival will take place in West Park.

The event, from 4.30pm to 8pm, will feature music and an array of colourful and dramatic dance performances including indie rock trio Little Comets and dance act Twist and Pulse from Britain’s Got Talent.

The best of the city’s talent will also be showcased, with performers including the Hull Freedom Chorus.

The star of the show – the Olympic flame itself – will arrive towards the end of the evening.

There will also be fun games, photo opportunities, a chance to be one of the lucky few who receive an exclusive Olympic giveaway or be part of internationally renowned DJ Mark Ronson’s search for the Beat of London 2012.

In York, where the flame will spend its second night, there will be a celebration at the racecourse from 2.30pm.

Singer Katy B, whose vocals feature on the official Olympic song Anywhere in the World, will be lighting up the stage with former Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere.

Twist and Pulse will also be on stage and the party will also feature a session with African drumming groups Umbu and Calabash and the gospel sounds of the University of York’s choir Zamar.

At 7.50pm the Olympic Torch will complete the final leg of the day’s journey to the stage on horseback, where it will be used to light a celebration cauldron.

Admission to the York event is by ticket only. They can be picked up for free from Visit York’s Visitor Information Centre on the corner of Museum Street and Blake Street, or from any York Explore Library Learning Centre, Acomb Explore or Tang Hall Library.
