Mystery as woman, 34, dies on her honeymoon

A FAMILY is waiting for answers after a bride from West Yorkshire died on her honeymoon in Crete.

Ruby Lewis, of Wetherby, suffered serious head injuries at a five-star resort on the Greek Island at the end of August and died 11 days later.

It is unclear how the 34-year-old sustained her injuries but it is thought she was found in a swimming pool.

Reports have suggested she could have suffered heat stroke, causing her to collapse and injure herself but the exact cause is unclear and the family may face a long wait to find out exactly what happened.

Her younger sister Jeanette Baskeyfield, speaking on behalf of the family, said in a statement: "The whole family is devastated.

"Ruby and Mark had just got married and settled down. They were happy newlyweds and this was supposed to be one of their happiest times together – their honeymoon.

"They didn't go straight after the wedding because they wanted to save up for it, stay in a five-star resort and do it properly.

"We're just in shock. All we know is that she suffered head injuries. We don't know what happened and we may never get to find out."

The couple moved to Wetherby about 18 months ago.

Mrs Lewis, a credit controller, was taken to hospital in Crete on August 28, then flown back to the UK, to Stoke, where she was originally from, on September 7. She died the next day.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned at North Staffordshire Coroners' Court.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it had provided consular assistance.
