Former Leeds United player Richard Naylor got the ball rolling when he tasted three shortlisted beers this week.

He said: “When I was growing up, my dad would drink Tetley’s. It’s nice that this brewery is taking over and supporting local businesses is really important.”

The beers are available to try at The Brewery Tap in New Station Street, the Midnight Bell in Water Lane, PIN in Dock Street and Garden Gate in Whitfield Place, Hunslet.

The winner will be unveiled at the Goodbye Tetley’s Festival which begins on June 10.

Tetley’s brewery in Hunslet will close on June 17. It can trace its history back 189 years.

Production of its famous cask ale will be moved to Wolverhampton. Tetley’s Smoothflow will be made in Tadcaster and its lager in Northampton.

Real ale buffs say the cask ale won’t taste the same.
