National parks give up to £6bn to economy

NATIONAL parks should be valued not just for their landscapes, but as “thriving rural economies contributing to national prosperity”, according to a new report.

The report, entitled “Valuing England’s National Parks” and published by National Parks England, reveals that the country’s 10 national parks contribute as much as £6bn to the economy.

John Dyke, chairman of National Parks England, said: “English national parks contribute between £4.1bn and £6.3bn to the economy through economic activity within their boundaries.

“This report really shows the great value of national parks to the economy.”

Environment Minister Richard Benyon added: “Our national parks are the most treasured places in the country. More than 90 million people visit them each year.

“This report highlights the value of these areas in promoting tourism and contributing to the UK economy.”

Other findings include the fact that there are around 22,500 businesses in the national parks, employing 140,000 people.

Jim Dixon, chief executive of the Peak District National Park Authority, said the report “shows that the economic boost of a national park extends well beyond its boundaries.”

Carl Lis, chairman of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, added: “In these difficult times, it is vital for the national park authority to get across the importance of these wonderful landscapes.”
