National tourism role for veteran councillor

Scarborough Borough Council’s cabinet member for tourism and culture, Coun David Jeffels, has been named as the chairman of British Destinations which will help bolster the nation’s multi-billion pound tourism trade.

Coun Jeffels, who was elected to the borough council in 1973, said: “The new organisation will play a key part in helping to boost the UK holiday industry and it is especially appropriate that it should have been established at a time when more people are seeking to holiday in Britain.

“It will enable a large number of holiday destination companies and organisations, such as Scarborough Borough Council and Welcome to Yorkshire, to work together to strengthen the holiday industry and all it has to offer to both the British people themselves and overseas visitors.”

Visit Britain has estimated tourism is worth more than £115bn to the UK’s annual economy.
