National treasure

WITH typical self-deprecation, Prince Philip jokes that he is approaching his “sell-by date” as he uses his 90th birthday to scale back many of his public duties and prioritise some of his personal interests.

The Duke of Edinburgh has certainly earned the right to be classed as a national treasure, judging by the warmth of his birthday greetings from people of all walks of life.

The Prince has done far more than his “bit” – the modest term he used to describe his contribution to the nation – and been far more than the driving force behind countless charities.

He has been the individual whose discretion and wisdom have been sources of enduring strength to the Queen for so many years.

Of course, people will remember some of Prince Philip’s gaffes. Yet, while they are part of his character and show that he is far removed from the prototype politicians and their spin doctors, these should not detract from his enormous contribution to public life – from championing wildlife, to inspiring young people through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Long may his spirit of good-humoured indefatigability continue.
