National treasure goes under the hammer

A RARE silver jewellery box is for sale at the Luxury Antiques and Fine Art Fair at Harewood, near Leeds, which opened yesterday.

The box, with a hand painted porcelain top, contains 18ct gold and multi-gemmed objects, made in France in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and bears the initials MLR in diamonds on the front.

It is for sale on T Robert’s stand and has been allocated an asking price of £25,000. It is believed that the unusual box may have been commissioned by the Rothschild family to incorporate several treasures they had already collected and was probably gifted to Dame Miriam Louisa Rothschild, sister to the third Baron Rothschild.

The event continues today and tomorrow. Admission is £5 at the door.
