Nature reserve fire out after two weeks

A FIRE that has ravaged great swathes of one of Britain's most valuable conservation areas is finally out, more than two weeks after it started.

The Humberhead Peatlands reserve comprises of Thorne, Goole, and Crowle Moors, as well as Hatfield Moor and is the largest area of raised bog wilderness in lowland Britain.

Senior reserve manager, Kevin Bull said "The tremendous hard work of the fire crews, volunteers, staff and our neighbours managed to contain the fire to around two per cent of the site – I can't thank everyone enough for their help and commitment.

"We're confident the vegetation should grow back quite quickly. Once the plants have re-colonised, the recovery will build from there."
