Near-crash in high-speed chase on A1

A suspect led police on a high-speed chase down the A1 in Yorkshire during which patrol cars were nearly hit by a quad bike falling out the back of the fleeing van, which was believed to be stolen.

The pursuit involving three police vehicles and a helicopter started around 2.30am yesterday when a patrol on the A1 near Wetherby saw a white van driving erratically south, weaving between lanes.

It failed to stop when requested and as it was being followed the rear doors burst open and the quad-bike fell out.

Two men jumped from the van when it finally stopped near Ferrybridge. One ran off while another plunged into the River Aire under the A1.

A man was pulled from the water around 2.50am.

Police recovered a 10,000 haul of suspected stolen goods including the quad bike.

A 23-year-old man from Worksop has been arrested.
