Neighbours fear new wine bar disturbance

PLANS to open a new wine bar with an attached restaurant and wine shop in Kelham Island, Sheffield, have been opposed by neighbours who say the business would cause "unwelcome and inescapable disturbance".

Slave to the Vine, a top-end bar which would also host wine tasting events and cookery classes, is the brainchild of Matt Bigland and Marc Sheldon, who already own the nearby Milestone gastropub.

The proposed new venture, at Ball Street Bridge, would be open from 9am to 11.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 11pm on Sundays.

Mr Bigland said: "We launched The Milestone in 2007 and, now that it is firmly established as a destination venue in Sheffield for eating and drinking, this is the natural next step.

"We're confident it's the right time to bring a complimentary venue to the area and one that our current guests, as well as new ones, will enjoy."

However, a number of objections to the licensing application for Slave to the Vine have been received from neighbours in Kelham Island, on the grounds of noise and potential anti-social behaviour.

One opponent, who lives at the nearby Grade Two-listed Cornish Place, said: "Given that Cornish Place is a stable community of working, professional people of a mixed age range, choosing to live here for both its proximity to town and its peaceful surroundings, I consider the proposed hours to be highly inappropriate, as they would undoubtedly lead to unwelcome and inescapable disturbance."

Another objector said: "I am a satisfied customer of The Milestone and was pleased to hear that the lads who run it are expanding their business in this way.

"However, as a resident in very close proximity, I take objection to their proposed opening hours. I feel that 11.30pm is far too late to be open during the week, as is 11pm on Sunday night."

A decision on the licence for Slave to the Vine will be made at a meeting of Sheffield Council's licensing committee on Thursday.
