Neighbours rally to solve problem of church's crumbling brickwork

A neighbour stepped in to solve the problem of crumbling brickwork at a South Yorkshire church which was becoming a real headache for a vicar and his congregation.

Mark Jessop and his father David work for a Doncaster-based building firm and the pair not only gave up their time to carry out repairs but persuaded their bosses to provide the materials.

Mr Jessop lives next door to Christ Church at Brampton, near Wath-upon-Dearne, and said he had noticed that a 300ft stone wall was collapsing in places and in need of repointing.

The 43-year-old, who with his father, 65, work for Frank Haslam Milan, said: "Living next door I've got to know the vicar and some of my family go to the church.

"Community spirit is diminishing and there are not many people these days who are willing to give up their free time and do something for nothing. I roped my dad in and he was happy to help out."

The Rev Peter Bold, who is in charge of the church said: "The church today is dependent upon volunteers who offer to carry out odd jobs.

"We're absolutely delighted that Mark and David have given up their time to repair the church wall. We would also like to thank Frank Haslam Milan for providing the materials."
