'Never catch on' museum celebrates 40th anniversary

WHEN the Colne Valley Museum first opened its doors 40 years ago those behind the project were told it would never catch on.

Today the museum, which depicts the domestic textile industry, and is run by volunteers is housed in a row of weavers' cottages in Golcar, Huddersfield.

This weekend it will celebrate its 40th birthday with an exhibition It'll Never Catch On In Golcar which charts the museum's history from its early stages, when it was given a cottage by the Golcar Socialist Club which had moved to larger premises.

The exhibition, which opens on Saturday at 2pm, will contain archive items including a pair of child's clogs which are a replica of a pair made for King George VI when the royal child was christened, along with the letter of provenance which was written by the clog-maker George Wainwright.

Today the museum, which officially opened in June 1971, is housed in cottages which were purpose-built specifically for handloom weaving and which are now being used to demonstrate that way of life.

Trustees at the museum have also decided to waive all admission charges throughout its birthday celebration period, from November 2010 to June 2011, as a thank you to visitors who have supported it.

Other events are planned over the next seven months.
