Never felt more like singing the Ouse as rivers celebrated

MUSICIANS and artists along the banks of the Ouse are getting into the flow ahead of York’s sixth annual Festival of the Rivers.

The popular festival, which begins this Saturday, sees the riverbanks around Kings Staith explode into life with a variety of entertainment for most of the rest of the month.

A central hub will be the Arts Barge, moored by Skeldergate Bridge – which will stage a host of daily events from comedy shows and film nights, to live music and dance.

The organisers say events will also take place in Rowntree Park and Tower Gardens – while barges will be cruising up and down the River Ouse featuring an array of music and literary programmes.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and social inclusion, said: “The ever-popular Festival of the Rivers is one of York’s iconic summer events, and one which residents and visitors can enjoy.

“I’m delighted that this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever, with new additions running alongside popular favourites.

“The festival gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate some of the things that make this city so special.”

As well as opportunities to try canoeing, the festival includes a race for cardboard boats on Saturday July 16.
