Never on a Sunday halts history

NEW opening hours for Hull's museums and galleries are being considered after an £11m flagship attraction launched three weeks ago does not open on Sundays.

A total of 5,746 people have visited the Hull History Centre since January 25, but like the Central Library it does not open on Sundays, and there are limited Sunday opening hours at the city's eight other council-run attractions.

Only the history centre and library open after 5pm – deterring many potential visitors and harming the night-time economy.

A report to a culture and leisure working group at Hull Council calls for a study into more user-friendly hours across the sites.

It said extending the hours at weekends and in the evenings could "help stimulate the evening economy and develop the caf culture that is working well elsewhere". A co-ordinated programme may also aid Hull's bid to be a City of Culture, the report said.

Labour group spokesman for culture, leisure and sport Coun Sean Chaytor said: "Obviously, we want better services for the public to ensure they can access our new first-rate facilities when they wish to."
