New app allows public to report crimes

A first-of-its-kind smartphone app, which allows members of the public to report crimes to the police, has been launched by an independent charity.

Self Evident, a free app for devices running Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android software, allows users to report the contact details, location and details of a crime.

In the London and Northumbria areas, crime reports via the app are to be accessed at the police headquarters and elsewhere in England and Wales they will be sent via the neighbourhood police team.

Supported by Google and the Robert Peel Trust, the app has been developed by the charity Witness Confident, which was founded in 2009 to reduce crime by focusing on improving people’s confidence in dealing with the police. The charity said the app will improve levels of unreported crime and ensure the police get all the details they need.
