New BBC boss to start after Easter

New BBC boss Tony Hall will start work at the corporation on Tuesday April 2, according to acting director general Tim Davie.

Mr Davie emailed BBC staff yesterday to confirm Lord Hall’s starting date, which he said would “allow Tony to take a short break between roles so he can join the BBC ready for business immediately after Easter”.

Lord Hall, a former BBC news executive who started at the corporation as a trainee 40 years ago, has been chief executive of the Royal Opera House since 2001.

He was handed the £450,000-
a-year director general role
after being directly approached
by the BBC Trust, only 12 days after George Entwistle resigned from the post 54 days into the
job.

Lord Hall – made a cross-bench peer in 2010 – will have to rebuild the BBC’s battered reputation after weeks of difficulties precipitated by the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal, and a subsequent report on BBC2’s Newsnight programme which mistakenly implicated Lord McAlpine in child abuse.

That mistake led to Mr Entwistle quitting his post and also saw the BBC settling with Lord McAlpine for £185,000.
