New bridge swings into place

The first public bridge to be built in York since the Millennium Bridge more than 10 years ago has been swung into place to provide a connection to the city centre.

The foot and cycle bridge crosses the River Foss from Navigation Road to Palmer Street on the £150m Hungate development – one of Yorkshire’s biggest regeneration projects.

It was installed on behalf of developers Hungate (York) Regeneration Ltd and will be handed over to City of York Council this autumn.

Earlier this month it was revealed that the development’s second phase will be assessed later in the year after being put on hold because of the economic downturn.

The completed project will include 720 homes built on a 10-acre site within York’s medieval bar walls, as well as a riverside piazza, walkways and cycle paths.
