New care home opens in historic manor following £300,000 renovation

A new care home has opened in a 12th century North Yorkshire manor following a £300,000 renovation by a businessman who wanted better standards of care for his mother.

The launch of Temple Manor Care Home, at Temple Hirst, outside Selby, has seen the creation of 20 new jobs, and plans are now under way for a dementia unit to be built in its expansive grounds.

Selby businessman Bryan Reader opened the facility following a series of visits to his mother after she went into a care home.

Believing he could offer her better care, he carried out the major refurbishment and opened his own home, but she died a week before it was completed. The businessman has now pledged to offer the same standards of care he wished for his mother.

Mr Reader, who lives in the manor, said: “Our aim is to maintain dignity and independence in a safe, comfortable environment.”

Plans for a dementia unit for up to 16 residents involve working with two universities to ensure a suitable environment is created for people with challenging behavioural needs.

Mr Reader is also negotiating with NHS North Yorkshire and York and other funding bodies to find ways of cutting the charges for care to residents and their hard-pressed relatives.

Temple Manor was previously a care home but was shut down by social services two years ago.

The major refurbishment has seen room sizes increased and en-suite facilities made available in each of its 15 ground floor rooms.

Mr Reader said: “We have to live down its former reputation. But everything is different and anyone is welcome to come and have a look round.”
