New care housing scheme is opened in Leeds

Wharfefdale View, the first of its kind in the city, aims to help elderly people stay independent by offering apartments with flexible 24/7 care as well as communal facilities.

The flagship scheme is owned and managed by Leeds City Council who successfully applied for £1.57m of Department of Health Care and Specialist Supported Housing Funding in January 2013.

The first tenants moved in just before Christmas but the scheme was officially opened last Friday by Leeds City Council leader Judith Blake.

Wharfedale View includes 45 self-contained apartments. Each has its own front door and its own kitchen and bathroom so that residents can live independently but with access to an assessed level of care dependent on their individual need.

Councillor Rebecca Charlwood, executive member for health, wellbeing and adults, said the council had responded to a demand for community based housing with support so people could remain independent.

She added: “This is about giving people the choice and control over their own care, as well as highlighting a real commitment from the council to investing and looking after older people in the city, providing them with the opportunity to live their lives independently and with the dignity they deserve.”

People will also benefit from organised activities in the scheme’s communal areas. There is a restaurant so people can socialise and entertain their families but there are also individual kitchens.
