New charges for bulky waste items

People will have to pay for some bulky rubbish to be removed under changes to household waste collections in Bradford.

From next week, instead of leaving large items outside their homes for days, people will be given an appointment by Bradford Council for a specific collection day.

A charge for some bulky items such as furniture or carpets will be introduced from Monday. Large electrical items such as televisions, washing machines, fridges and cookers, will be collected free of charge. The charge will be £10 for up to five items; £15 for six to 10; £20 for 11 to 15; and £25 for 16 to 20 items. Previously charges were made for a collection of six items or more, or more than four collections per year.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment, sport and sustainability, said: “Like many local authorities, Bradford Council has had to introduce these charges, but at the same time we are improving the service and ensuring it is efficient and responsive to the needs of our residents. The money the council receives from bulky waste collection charges will be used to fund the improved service.”
