New city TV channel to air next year

THE team behind a new television channel for Sheffield are hoping to reach up to 400,000 people with their programmes after being awarded a licence to broadcast.

Sheffield Local Television, or SLTV, was told yesterday by communications regulator Ofcom that it had won a competition to run a channel which will focus on the city.

Steve Buckley, chairman of the social enterprise company which will run the station, said there were ambitious plans for output with a hope to start broadcasting by the end of 2013.

He added: “This is completely new territory but we have done a lot of research. We will be providing four hours a day of original local content, including news, cultural programming, entertainment and music.”

The channel which will carry local advertising, employ a “core team” of broadcasting professionals and recruit around 80 volunteers to help.
