New deputy chief fire officer aiming to build on progress

HUMBERSIDE Fire and Rescue Service has appointed a new deputy chief fire officer following the retirement of Mazen Khuri, who had held the post for eight years.

Richard Hannigan takes up the second most senior position in the brigade after three years as assistant chief.

Mr Hannigan, who lives in Kirmington, North Lincolnshire with his wife Anne and daughters Kate and Eleanor, said his aim was to deliver an improved service despite tough economic conditions.

He said: "I feel greatly honoured to be appointed as Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

"I have been with Humberside for 27 years and have learned to appreciate the dedication and skill of our people whose aim is to provide a first-class fire and rescue service.

"Our record of preventing fires and dealing with emergencies is improving yearly. My ambition is to build on that work to ensure that HFRS is recognised as a premier fire and rescue service making our communities safer in the face of a difficult financial climate".

Chief fire officer Frank Duffield said: "Richard Hannigan has been an important member of the senior management team for some years now and, as deputy CFO, brings a professional approach that will further enhance the work of the team.

"The fire community will know Richard from the national work he does with the Chief Fire Officers Association and Skills for Justice. He is a dedicated player whose enthusiasm and total commitment will take us forward."

Mr Duffield also paid tribute to Mr Khuri, who retired last Friday after more than 33 years' service.

He said: "Mazen Khuri has been hugely successful, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues throughout the service and his contribution has been significant.

"In particular, his enthusiastic character will be missed as he has helped manage the service through a period of great change with great skill and commitment in the last eight years."
