Pictures of the Rolling Stones, Jack Nicholson and Damon Albarn are among the 250 images included in Bailey’s Stardust at the National Portrait Gallery in central London.

There is also a new picture of Kate Moss, previously unseen pictures taken last year during a trip to India and whole rooms dedicated to his wife and the Stones.

The gallery’s director Sandy Nairne said: “Bailey’s Stardust is a very special event. It offers an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the widest range of the mercurial portraits created by David Bailey, one of the world’s greatest image-makers.”

Mr Bailey, 75, who grew up in the East End of London, made his name in the 1960s as one of a group of young photographers including Terence Donovan
who documented the era in the capital and rubbed shoulders with stars from the arts and fashion worlds.

His relationship with model Jean Shrimpton recently inspired a television drama, We’ll Take Manhattan.

The photographer’s work is also set to go on display later this month at the Nicholls & Clarke Building in Shoreditch, east London, in a separate exhibition.

It will feature images taken by Mr Bailey and fellow legendary photographer Bruce Weber using Nokia’s new Lumia 1020 smartphone. The pair took over 1,000 photographs during a trip to New York, 30 of which will be displayed between 13 and 21 September.

More images from the shoot will feature in exhibitions set to take place in different destinations across the globe at later dates this year.
