New gateway is key to future investment, says town mayor

“GOOD progress” is being made on a major road scheme to transform one of the main routes in and out of Doncaster, according to council chiefs.

Three months into construction, Doncaster’s Southern Gateway Improvement Scheme, along White Rose Way, is on course to hit an important Christmas deadline.

The first phase of work on the route, which links Doncaster town centre with the M18 motorway, began in June this year.

Work must be at a sufficient stage by Christmas in order to fit in with Network Rail’s 48-hour closure of the railway, when a new bridge will be lifted in over the East Coast main line and other local lines.

Dave Lowther, Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering’s project manager for the scheme, said: “We are working extremely hard alongside Doncaster Council and Network Rail to deliver this regionally important project.

“There remains a heavy focus in preparing for the 48-hour full Christmas blockade of the railway which will enable the new bridge beams to be lifted into place.”

By March 2013, the entire White Rose Way route will have become a dual carriageway.

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies said: “This key gateway into Doncaster is crucial for future investment.”
