New home for piece of weir history

Work is due to get underway in March to relocate a piece of Todmorden’s history.

Early 19th century ironwork from the original Todmorden Weir sluice gate is to be relocated and following a public consultation exercise, the Environment Agency has announced the mechanical structure will be removed and reconstructed as a local heritage feature on a site between Oak Street and Bar Street in Todmorden.

It will be taken away to be cleaned, repainted and will then be rebuilt this spring on its original supporting stones.

The feature has to be moved from its original location as part of the third-phase of a scheme to improve flood defences in Todmorden which began last summer.

Contractors, VolkerStevin, are preserving the 200 year-old cast iron sluice gate mechanism at their expense.

Donald Murray, VolkerStevin project manager for the Environment Agency’s Todmorden flood scheme, said: “We now expect to start dismantling the structure in March and we hope to have it restored on its new site in May.”

The flood work includes the strengthening of 19th century culverts and the building of 500 metres of new flood wall.
