New jubilee bridge for market town

RESIDENTS in a North Yorkshire market town are to be consulted over designs for a new jubilee pedestrian bridge to celebrate the landmark anniversary.

The bridge – to be erected across the Leven at the west end of Stokesley town centre – will replace the existing high-level footbridge that has been closed due to concerns over pedestrian safety.

Nat Smith, chairman of the Stokesley River Leven Group, said: “The River Leven Group has found great enthusiasm for a jubilee bridge when talking with local residents and business proprietors. They believe that it will encourage many to walk rather than drive into town and that it will also attract visitors who will be able to have a safe circular walk along the river and through the high street.”

Mr Smith says it has been suggested that the bridge will be a gently sloping arch so that mobility vehicles and pushchairs can easily cross the river.

Plans for the new jubilee bridge will be on display in the foyer of Stokesley Town Hall on Friday and Saturday May 18 and 19.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 10am to 7pm on both days.
