New plans unveiled for market site in tree row

Anne McIntosh, MP for Thirsk, Malton and Filey, presented a petition at Parliament earlier this year which urged the Government to encourage Hambleton District Council to replace the five trees saying she had been contacted by many constituents “who have been angry and disappointed that the trees were removed.”

The council said safety fears including concerns tree roots were lifting flags and could cause a trip hazard were behind the decision to remove the trees.

Plans have now been unveiled to revamp Thirsk Market Place over the coming few weeks as part of a drive to spruce up the town centre.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “Widespread consultation has taken place to find out what local people, business leaders and members of the Town Council wanted in the area around the town clock.

“Now Hambleton District Council – which owns the land – is ready to implement a scheme which will see the paving re-laid, seating areas created, trees and tubs planted. There will also be electricity provision to enable the annual Christmas tree to be lit and outdoor events to take place in the area.”
