New play areas on way for children

Children in Bradford are to benefit from new play areas around the district by next April despite funding cuts.

Bradford Council has released funding from the Government's Play Builder Grant for nine areas in parks and green spaces.

The grant was originally intended to fund 22 new play areas

between 2009 and 2011 but was reduced after being reviewed

by the Government earlier this year.

The 379,831 this year is enough to fund only nine remaining play sites in addition to the 10 already provided in the first phase of the project.

However, two others can also be completed using other council funds this financial year, and one of the Phase Two play areas has already been completed, bringing the total up to the 12 originally envisaged for this year.

The new projects to be completed by the end of March 2011 are: Spencer Road, Horton Grange; Bowling Park, West Bowling; Blackshaw, Buttershaw; Princeville Primary, Lidget Green; Caremont Park, Wrose; Woodside Play, Woodside; Northcliffe Park, Shipley; Eagles' Nest, Guardhouse, Keighley and Tong Park, Baildon.
