New poet laureate for county named

A WRITER from Sheffield has been named Derbyshire’s fourth poet laureate, taking over the role from from Peak District writer Ann Atkinson.

Matt Black, who writes poems for both adults and children, will hold the position of Derbyshire’s poet laureate until September 2013.

The father-of-two said: “I am really looking forward to it and see it as an adventure.

“I’ve bought myself a map of Derbyshire and now I’m just waiting to see what happens – it’s very exciting.”

Derbyshire County Council leader Andrew Lewer said: “The laureate project was developed to celebrate Derbyshire places, people and traditions through poetry.

“It also aims to encourage people to read and have a go at writing their own poetry.

“We wish Matt all the best in his new role and it will be fascinating to follow his progress over the next two years.”

Mr Black will be talking about his work and reading a selection of poems at an event at Alfreton Library tomorrow evening.
